Just moved out of California and no longer have to worry about emissions on my 78 F-100 (302). I'm wanting to remove the emissions controls that have always giving me some troubles and limited what I can do with the truck.
So my question is have any of you done this and if so what issues if any did you run into?
The first thing I was thinking of doing is replacing the intake manifold, getting rid of the egr valve and replacing the finicky 2bbl (motorcraft or autolite 2100 or 2150, don't remember for sure which it is) with a new 4bbl.
Ca requires emissions on vehicles 1976 and later. 1975 and earlier are exempt. Any emission parts replacement/modification done to your vehicle will need to have a CARB (Ca Air Resource Board) stamp on it. If you have a catalytic converter, it can't be removed and has to be replaced with a like for like model. Finally, you will still need to smog it every two years and will increase the chance of it not passing the visual inspection with equipment removed.

My bad. Speed reading only goes so far Back to the original post, I would go with the 4 barrel w/ intake. As for the EGR, I opted to keep mine. Also, you may wish to consider dual exhaust, if you don't have it already. This will make your engine breathe much easier. Can't say it will improve gas mileage that much. Especially with the new found response.

Headers and dual exhaust first or at the same time!
All my toys are smog exempt.... except for the Ferrari.
I was pondering a 328 GTS but didn't want to deal with archaic 80s-era emissions technology. There is something positive to be said about 2000 and newer systems that are computer-controlled.
Beautiful... but I'd be fearful to wheel a $25 million car in Khalifornia. ..Someone would likely feel like they "deserve" it without working for it.
When I was a kid, I first saw the 275 on the cover of the November '67 issue of "Road & Track" and fell in love with it but it was way out of my price range, the price new was $20K!
That would have been a great "401K" though!
I just ran the $20K through the CPI calculator. That would be the equivalent of $144,100.00 today, still a bargain!
Now, back to your regularly scheduled thread.
I'm in New Mexico now. Only vehicles 1982 and newer must pass emissions.
I'm in Albuquerque. Interested in this because my truck came from California too.
I already removed the belt to the smog pump. I see there is a lot of vacuum controlled stuff that could be removed and plugged. Im wondering about getting rid of the EGR.....just make a block off plate?

I'm in ABQ too.
Have you done most work yourself? I havent had the time...or space living in an apartment. Any mechanics or body shops you would recommend out here for the bigger jobs?
You guys should have traded your trucks to people that bring their 76-79 dents here from out of state and then are trying to sell them on craigslist because the have no smog equipment.
