I recently purchased a 1963 F350 dually that had been sitting in a garage for several years. It has an old restoration and needs some underbody repair but overall its a very sound, good looking truck. When I bought it I needed a battery. The starter also wouldn't engage, 75% of the time it would just spin. So I had it rebuilt at a reputable shop whose bread and butter is the old starters. While I was involved with the starting system, I opted to change out the altenator. after all this was done I went to start the truck and the solenoid was buzzing at me....engine wouldn't start. I changed the solenoid (NAPA) and connected it back up. When I attempted the start it was still buzzing at me. At one point it did engage but only once. Thinking that I may have drained the battery, I now have it on charge. I don't think it was the battery but I'm not sure what else to change...any suggestions?
Well, I guess you have to work things out on your own. The issue was actually a ground problem. The ground was so bad that when I disconnected the battery at the solenoid and the starter cable at the solenoid and touched them together, nothing happened. I was also unable to read continuity on the positive cable from end to end as well as the (hot) starter cable from the solenoid. I replaced the battery cable, cleaned the (hot) starter cable, cleaned the battery ground cable to the truck frame and starter ground cable to the truck frame and the truck rumbled to life. Hopefully this will help someone.
Grounding issues can really be bad. I had several years of half Azz fuel gauge readings, so i bought a new one and had to go back and remove some paint and crud around the ground wire connect and the gauge worked like a champ.
Sweet looking truck and Awsome looking garage bld.
