Hi everyone
I recently purchased a 1996 F350 and an irritation has arisen. sometimes, when driving, the motor starts to run rough, has a severe loss of power and the engine light comes on. After keeping it running by increasing the rpm it clears up and runs normal. No error codes are registered. Any ideas?
My first thought is the under valve cover harness is bad. If you are getting a check engine light, there is a code stored. Most parts house code readers won't communicate with the powerstroke.
I would agree that you should check your uvch (under valve cover harness) but in my case it was a constant issue, not an issue resolved by running the engine at a higher rpm... Besides that I'm not sure what to tell you but before long somebody with much more knowledge and experience than me will chime in.
The engine has a very rough idle and I have to keep the rpm above 1000 to keep it from quitting.
It started when I ran one of the fuel tanks dry. I switched over to the full tank and about 3 or four days later it started to show up. It runs perfect for a long time, sometimes a month passes before it occurs again, and clears up after a few minutes of revving at about 1500 to 2000 rpm.
I have changed the fuel filter to insure no gunk was causing the issue.
The rough idle occurs when the engine is cold or at normal temp.
Check the plugs on the UVCHs for burnt pins and melted plugs. If the IDM senses an electrical problem on one injector, it can shut that whole bank down. Also, water in the IDM can cause what you are describing.
