I've used both designs; if the brushes are in good shape, they both work equally well.
With a 3-bolt denso, I've started just leaving the top bolt out. It's got two, it works fine. Just make sure they are tight -- remember that the real force from the starter is not against the bolts, but against the nose of aluminum that slides inside the steel engine adapter plate/transmission adapter.

I believe Denso and Nippondenso are the same thing. And, as far as I can tell there are really only two designs. The Bosch and the Denso look very similar. I had a Mitsu in it before and I'm sure it had a long life before I bought the truck. It just started slow cranking and popping and clicking so I put in the Denso, now It cranks crazy fast! We'll see how long of a life I get out of it but so far I am pleased.

One thing I have heard which is good to keep in mind in general probably anyway, is don't forget we are not comparing apples to apples when replacing a new starter with an old tired starter. Most threads you read go like this, which starter should I put in, puts new starter in, regardless of which one, wow it cranks crazy fast. So I don't know of anyone who has had one style of starter in new, then another style new to compare.
