OK, so I finally got a new carburator. Here's the question.
When I took my old carb the the store they matched the ID number and gave me a rebuilt Carter carb but it has an electronic choke, (my old one was manual.) The guy told me that my old one was originally electronic but looks like someone modified it to be manual. He says all I have to do is "hotwire" it to a wire that's only "hot" when the car is running. How do I do that?!
I don't want to go to a mechanic now, I've done so much on my own.... PLEASE HELP.
What you need to do is get a multimeter ($6), a short length of wire and a blade connector. Using the multimeter find a wire under the hood that gives you 12v when the key is switched to the on position and no power when the ignition switch is off. I believe the factory electric choke wire is a thicker (14guage?) wire that is white with a black stripe, you should be able to find it somewhere around the regulator or alternator wiring bundle. Run a wire from there to the blade connector on the black round choke housing on your carb. That should do it.
If your ignition is all stock then it's running the resistor wire. Here's how that works; +12V from the ignition switch goes through the resistor wire and then through the coil primary windings. They are connected in series and form a voltage divider. The resistance of the resistor wire and the coil are approximately the same so half the voltage drops across the resistor wire and the remaining half drops across the coil primary.
If you hook up anything else that draws power from the coil primary, you upset the balance of the voltage divider and drag down the voltage available to the coil. Also, the resistor wire has to deliver more current than designed for and eventually burns up taking the rest of the wire loom that it's buried in with it.
Well, this is my 1st car project ever.
So far I've done mechanical things that I've never dreamed of! Including taking the old carburator apart & putting it back togeather; (worked the same, by the way).
I am very tempted to just "go for it" but I don't want to ruin the carb (or anything else) just because I "went for it". (know what I mean?)
I dont think I have an "idiot light".
Can I send you pictures of my truck....? Maybe you can tell from them?
Hey Old Green, I can't tell from the pics. It's the gauge below the fuel gauge. Either it's a light that says Alt or a gauge with a needle. Oh, the pic that says "What's this" is the EGR valve. I see it's not hooked up which is good.
The reason I ask about the gauge is because if you have one then there is a easy wire under the hood to splice into for the power for the choke. Do you feel confortable with cutting and splicing wires?
BB... Yes I think I can handle that.
But I would double check I got the right wire.... I'll take some pictures tonight and post them tomorrow moring. Would you be able to look at them and let me know?
