I'm looking at a 1978 F100. It's about two hours away, so I haven't been able to see it yet. The owner says it is a 351W and has been rebuilt. I'd guess he meant 351M but, anyways, he sent the photo below...
Is that a coolant temperature sensor with the wiring connector broken off? Does this look like a later year engine then?
Well, it does look like a temp sender, but not broken, just missing the push-on sender wire. But it sure doesn't look like my 351m, which has the sender in the front of the block
Yeah, the oil fill neck looks like a more recent design as well, maybe he meant 351W after all.
Edit: seller sent a picture of the door plate, looks like it came with a 302. So as to where this motor came from, I would think that the ECT sensor was only used on later fuel injected models, correct?
The seller said the engine was original as far as he knew but I guess that's a bust. I hope to go look at it this weekend and will try to spot the casting numbers. If that ECT sensor is a remnant of fuel injection, that'd make it probably from an 87+ truck. Right?
