speedometer need help

I have a 53 f100 with a 3 speed manual trans. I installed a new speedometer gear onto the cable and installed the cable into the trans. Ran the truck speedometer worked for a few seconds then stopped I removed the cable from the trans and found the gear had fallin into the trans. I had to remove the rear of the trans to retrieve the gear what a pain in the *** that was. Is there some way to hold this gear into the cable I just slid the gear onto the cable end is there a clip to hold it on or am I missing something. Thanks

Many of them are pressed on, but also many have a circular retaining clip as well. You know, the kind that looks like a washer with a slice cut out of it.

8A17292 .. Retainer, Speedometer Driven Gear / Obsolete

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has 1 = 800-546-7278.

NORTZ & VIRKLER FORD in Lowville NY has 14 = 315-376-6594.

AITKEN MOTOR CO. in Aitken MN has 46 = 218-927-2169.
--------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the following is also missing, or if it's there, is hard as a rock. Either way, gear lube will leak past the cable.

1A17298 .. Oil Seal (O-Ring), Speedometer Cable / Obsolete

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS has 3.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 23 = 800-543-4959.

There is no clip, Julie the gear you posted is a later model for mustangs. The gear I have has a long stem that slids into the cable end. It slids on and out easy wondering if cable end is worn and gear should snap on. Driving with no speedometer right now.Help

I think Sam posted that just as an example of what the clip looks like in general.

The part numbers and sources Bill posted are for the actual parts you need.

Point is there is a retaining clip that you are supposed to have, don't have, and will need to get in order for the gear to stay on.

Call one of the folks Bill pointed out to you to get one!

Does it sit in the tranny and retained by a big nut like the one shown here? If so, there's no clip. You have to make sure the stem on the bottom gets into the hole in the trans or it will fall out. PS I"ve never seen a plastic gear for these, sure it's the right one?

What that plastic gear is from/for, I haven't a clue...it sorta resembles the original steel gear all these trucks came with.

Really? Then it should work, Right?

In the cable replacement procedure it has a note telling you to ensure you have rotated the inside flexible cable and that it was fully "set" into the square hole on the gear. Did you do that? Are you sure your inside cable is long enough?

I have also seen these gears with the small shaft on the end lengthened some to act as a spacer.

The oil seal ring Bill mentioned goes into the groove on the end housing. And this cable is held in place with a retainig clip and bolt similar to the one pictured below.

Yes Julie that exactly how I installed it. I'll try it again tomorrow thought maybe I missed something but I guess not. Didn't want to install again till I checked to see if I did it right. A real pain to remove from rear of trans when it falls inside. Thank all for the help.Jim
