Top or Bottom ??? On or Off

I have been introduced to the world of the early '60's Ford trucks. This includes the canister type oil filter assembly. I have opted to modify the truck to a spin on oil filter. In the process of doing this I'm left with a head scratcher... 2 things concern me:

1st - orientation of filter surface has the words "TOP" facing down.

2nd - Will my billet aluminum plate seal over the old surface as it looks like a plate is already installed but facilitates the canister type filter assembly only. If you look closely you can see where the wrench slipped on the nut securing it to the engine block at some point in its past. Does that need to be removed to install the spin filter conversion plate?

Thanks

You didn't specify, but it looks like you have a Y-block there. The center bolt for your spin on filter will have a male "nipple" which fits inside the disposable oil filter cartridge. The word "top" should be at the top...I'm not sure the exact reason, but there is an up and down orientation. I would also be concerned at the amount of rtv sealer behind the plate and falling out elsewhwere. I would replace it with the spin on adapter plate. Make sure the plate is flat, not cupped and use the heavy fiber gasket, not rubber...they slip out. Also don't use rtv...I would suggest formagasket or gaskacinch....something sticky that won't end up in your oil pan. Speaking of which...i would clean out the oil pan best as you can....there's silicone in there. Then you can use a spin on filter or your remote adapter...either one.

Thanks for the information and it is a Y-block 292. The plate in the picture is original to the old style canister filter, which confuses me as to the orientation "top" being at the bottom. I agree that the RTV needs to be remove and I'm trying to do that but whoever built the engine liked the stuff. My understanding is that it could become a problem if introduced into the oiling system. So are you saying that I need to remove the original plate for the old canister filter and replace it with the "spin" off oil filter plate when I get it? Thanks again.

yup, that's what I would do. The new kit will come with the right bolt and a new plate for your regular disposable oil filters. If you don't get the heavy fiber gasket with the kit, let me know, as I may have one around. Don't use the rubber gasket, if it comes with your kit. Orient the top...on top, when you install it....I think the holes on top keep the oil filter from draining completely when the engine is sitting.

Yes, you have to remove the old plate. The reason it is upside down is because the person who installed it did so incorrectly.

To remove that nut, get an appropriately sized 6 point socket and use a belt sander to remove just enough material from the end to remove the inner chamfer of the socket. This will allow you to better engage the nut and prevent it from slipping off and rounding the nut.

The billet adapters I know of come with an o-ring and that should be fine to use.

Stock plate removed and surface cleaned

New billet aluminum plate installed

Mission accomplished.

Thanks for all the help, I'm sure I would have 2nd guessed everything I did without everyone's help. Fit like a glove...is the old assembly something that would sell to a purist type restorer? Thanks again

Is that one of the adapters that are currently on eBay? I've been waiting to hear from someone who has bought one about the cosmetic and functional quality.

Yes, it was off EBAY and I was very impressed with its rigidity. I was worried it would flex when tightened up. I haven't been able to leak check it yet as I have the starter being rebuilt. The oring is pressed within a groove that has been machined into the plate and is very secure and difficult to remove. Ido t expect any leakage or slippage of the oring. My initial impressions are well made and sufficient for the task.
