9" rear end

We'll I continue to move along on my frame and am now in the process of removing the DANA & installing a 9" rearend. The original U Bolts wrap around the 2" spring and through the mount on the DANA but the 9" is larger around (3") than the DANA. 57 and newer springs are wider and therefore their lower mount leaves the U Bolts away from the sides of the springs.

Original lower mount.

Rearend & 3rd member are cleaned and POR 15ed. Backing plates & springs are out being sand blasted. I know many have made this conversion but I can't find the answer for my Axle/Shock mount.

Sure could use some help on this problem because that's pretty much the last of my chassis/frame issues.

How wide are the 250s springs? I thought I saw that they were wider than 2".

I was told by our local spring manufacture that the U Bolts need to be tight against the springs to keep from breaking the center bolts.

Have read the same thing. That's why Retorques after 500 or 1000 miles. Loose u-bolts can mean broken springs too.

Lower spring plate

Here is a shot of the lower plates from a 1963 F-100 9" axle. No numbers but will give you an idea of anther style to BOL for.
If you need the lower plates with the shock mount another FTE member may be able to help with a year range. The 63' axle has them welded to the housing.
Update: I did a search on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Ford-F-...xWFYkh&vxp=mtr

It looks like a GM Sierra-class piece. I used them on my 9" conversion. BUT if you look closely, hold it up against an axle tube, the holes aren't "square" pattern because the springs on the GM are not perfectly parallel.

The TAAK number sounds like Ford tho. The GM pieces are easily several times stronger/stiffer than the F150/250 pieces I found at the boneyards.

If your springs are 2 1/2" wide I used dakota plates on my F1 and welded on the original F1 shock mount. 3" axle tubes on my GM 10 bolt rear.

Here's what the mount looks like with the shock mount. I'm sure it's off an old Ford truck but not sure of the year.

This uses Square topped U Bolts that go across the Leafsprings, past the axle and bolt from under the mount (side shown in the picture.

5796 is the Ford basic part number for a rear spring seat cap, but there's no TAAK-5796-A listed in the 1948/56 Ford truck parts catalog (see pic below).

I also looked in the 1953 Ford/Mercury of Canada truck parts catalog, 1956/57 Ford truck parts catalog, 1957/63 Ford truck parts catalog: Not listed.

I'm pretty sure they're from a truck newer than 56 as the 56's didn't have 9" rearends yet.

TAAA/TAAK part number prefixes were introduced in 1953, used thru 1956.

5796: Pic-column right = 1957/63 truck parts catalog does not list TAAA or TAAK prefixes for F100 2WD or 1959/63 F100 4WD

1959/67 F100's with Limited Slip came with Dana 44's. 1963/66: Dana 60.2 with Limited Slip was optional / 1966/67: Dana 60.3 with Limited Slip was optional.

1957/67 F100 2WD rear springs interchange (type of rear axle makes no difference): 2 1/4" wide ~ 24" > > eye bolt < < 28"

Bill,
Thanks for the info. Could have sworn I took it off the truck I robbed the 9" from. But that was over 35 years ago
