71 SWB

1971 F-100 roller. Had a 302, still has the trans, 3 on the tree. Too bad the PO didn't leave the seafoam green alone. I figure I have a good frame and solid bed and assorted bits and pieces, the cab is rough and the driver door is jacked up. I have a 69 being delivered Sunday with a good cab so we will see.
My first car was a pickup truck, 1971 F-250 Sports Custom Boxwood and Seafoam green. I want to build it with a coyote, suspension upgrades and a six speed manual. Boxwood green for a truck with trim delete.

I agree, had my eye on a couple of short beds in really good condition but I wanted a challenge, and the idea of cutting into those super clean trucks made me sweat. Learned how to run a TIG unit welding aluminum when I was growing up. My family owned an irrigation company. Looking to polish up the old welding skills and make something useful out of an abandoned project. Finally have a shop to work in now, feels like the time is right.

Just went out and scrubbed the passenger frame rail and the VIN matches the door. F10GLK00785
No perches or radiator but I found a lucky penny in the ashtray.

Pulled back the rubber flooring and what did I see? Rust, lots and lots of rust. Have a 69 F-250 being delivered later in the week. Cab is in better shape.

Yeah, you might start looking for some floor pans. Oh, and I noticed that the PO left the key on too. Be careful that you don't kill your battery. But seriously, It has protential. I've seen worse looking trucks on this forum, and the owners get them turned around. You can do it too! Sounds like you're on a good start by having a donor truck coming.

I couldn't believe how much rust was on the floors, I'll have to check the battery.
Met a guy at cars and coffee Saturday that spent 2.5 years putting a early 70's Chevy truck together with twin turbos and a modern 6.0 motor, he told me to get a plan and stick to it. That sounds like good advise.

The 69 was a miss. Passenger side cab mount had been hacked off. More rust than the cab I already have. All around the drip rails, around the steering column on the firewall. I told him he could hang on to that one. Time to start tearing into this one to see if I want to tackle this cab or get a donor.

what horse power will your coyote motor have? I'm getting ready to start on a '72 SWB. I'm currently looking for a replacement bed. the original bed is rusted up pretty bad.

The coyote stock motor runs at 430, if I do an Aluminator with a supercharger it should be north of that considerably. I'm thinking around 600hp. I am leaning towards the 2nd option. Going tonight to pick up a 72 Ranger XLT for $2K.

Looks like a fun project. I am running a mostly stock coyote in my 68 F100 and the stock coyote motivates it really, really well. These motors are very impressive in how they put the power down.

Give it a shot with the 400 hp version first....my bet is you wont be dissapointed in the power.

Plans for suspension?

Sean

Looking at the Crown Vic for the front, I have not decided on the back. My wife has a 2011 GT convertible and we love her coyote. Of course the budget may make the decision for me.

Brought this rig to the house last night and am debating on transplanting the cab, fenders and tailgate on the short bed, or restoring it. It is clean but I don't really want a long bed and it would be a ton of work to rehab all the trim. I got it for the right price and it runs, drives and has all the major parts needed for the short bed. I'll live with it for a while and see.
I've read through your thread on your build, very inspiring!

I'm having issues finding a SWB bed. i might have to buy a donor truck as well. My F100 was my wife's grandfather's and it lived it's life on the Ranch. Needless to say, the exterior is beat to hell, but still driveable and used on the ranch today.

thanks for the info on the motor. i'm going to install the Crown Vic frontend as well.

Life on the farm is hard, most equipment shows the wear and tear. My 71 has a good frame and a bed that can be rebuilt, the tailgate is pretty trashed. The bed and frame is what I bought it for, the rest is pretty rough. The 72 is clean and will make great donor parts for the remainder of the short bed. I have decided to start tearing down the 71 so I can start with the crown vic front end, rear suspension then clean and eventually paint the frame. I can drive the 72 until I am ready to start tearing it apart and work on it's interior.
