Gearing allows you to go highway speeds at a comfortable rpm. A big V8 will just get you to that speed faster and burn a lot more fuel doing it. A 302 V8 compared to a 300 big six is only 2ci difference but the 300 big six has a much longer stroke which makes it more efficient in the long run. A small V8 has a short stroke which allows it to rev faster thus getting more horsepower out of it at higher rpm. This is good for track racing such as the Trans Am series. A 390 could give you a lot of both but burns a lot of gas doing it. If you are just driving the truck empty as a pleasure and not towing or hauling the 240 will give you good mileage over your long distance.
How about a gearing change. A 240 will do great with a 3.0 rear gear. I am running 3.55 with mine but I have an overdrive. I tried the 3.0 but the final drive with the overdrive was to steep. It worked great with out the overdrive engaged
I'd trade my 302 C-6 for an I6 with a OD trans any day. At 65 mph, my truck is begging for another gear not to mention the high RPM's at that speed, and both fuel tanks better be full.
I Changed the whole third member out. got the 3.55 set out of a 65 Truck with a 352 in it and I am not sure what The one with the 3.0 came out of I bought it at a swap meet set up that way.
I am interested in swapping my 300 I6 to the a V8 more like the 390 you have.
But what Ford truck or car model that engine came on. Thanks.
Sorry I have not logged in in a while to see this question. I am not sure because the previous owner installed it, but I think it came from a mid 1970's F-250. I hope that helps.
