I have the 6.2 gasser and did the north and west entrance. We stayed 2 nites in fishing bridge; our first nite we spent in West Yellowstone. Both are good places and full, and expensive. A lot of it is about what type of campers and explorers you are. The experience of being inside the park out weighs the cost difference to us. We love the place and will be there next summer more than likely. My DW gets back from the Persian Gulf in Feb and will be planning a Yellowstone and West Coast ocean trip for sure...
If you come back east thru the East Gate, be sure to run over to Devils Tower!! If you saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind, you'll enjoy it.... even if you didn't see the movie it's a must see!
When it was all said and done, we first booked at Fishing Bridge, but found the reviews for that campground are really pretty bad. I know folks say you are not there anyway, but we are really partial to wooded settings and privacy. Full hookups are not very important to us, so we researched the other campgrounds in the park and changed our reservations to Grant Village.
In doing that we did discover the only campground in Yellowstone where they would allow a fifth wheel over 30 feet to stay was Fishing Bridge so we sneaked in under the wire at 29' 8". I don't know how strictly they adhere to the length requirements, but there are multiple warnings on the site that arriving with something bigger than what you state at the time of making the reservation will be turned away. When we called we were told they automatically figure the truck will be 20 feet and that is what they add to the total 50' allowed. My wife said what if our fiver was 31 feet. Sorry they said Fishing Bridge is your only option.
Grant Village should work out great for you. If you want a hot shower you can always drive up to Fishing Bridge and take one. If they haven't changed it you can pay a few dollars for a shower at the office area. Of course you can always just jump in one of the lakes. The water is cold and watch out for leaches.
We have stayed inside the park years ago when we had a slide in camper but now that we have gotten so big stay outside the park. We've stayed at Grizzly RV Park just outside the West Entrance a few times, I think that the West entrance is more convenient because you enter in the middle of the two loops, it's a long drive all the way around the park so plan on a few days for each loop to see everything. Fishing Bridge is way on the south end and not close to any other the major attractions, but close to Yellowstone Lake where many like to fish.
