i have a new f250 and the engine makes a knock as the key is turned over.....it only occurs with the initial crank of the engine and is gone immediately.....is this a timing issue?? thanks for any feedback you can provide
Mine does that also. A knocking/rattiling for just a second or two then stops. It has done that since it was new and since an oil change by me. Motorcraft 5W-20 and Motorcraft filter.
i only have 1000 miles on the truck and live in southern california, so etxreme temps hot or cold arent the issue. it doeasnt do it at all while driving, just the initial start up. i have yet to change the oil since the truck is brand new. thanks for the feedback

Does it sound like a lifter clacking for the first 10-15 seconds ? It may be piston slap, do a search here and you'll find it.
Originally posted by SouthBay420 sorry it took so long for me to respond...have been away...it is definitely not a lifter....
Yea, I wouldn't think it could be, since the 6.8 liter V-10 is an overhead cam design, but my noise sounds exactly like a lifter from an OHV V-8, even though I know it can't be. But in my case, it's the only like sounding thing I can dredge up out of my brain to help explain my noise.
Remember the wrist pin "slap" we once had in the old FE motors? Imagine how that "slap" would sound in the aluminum blocks today. My dad bought a '67 F100 with around 10K miles on it back in the latter part of '68. It had a 352 engine in it and it knocked until we overhauled it with over 200K on it. Every now and then that V10 slap I have sounds like the old wrist pin knock, but it fortunately goes away after a few seconds. Whether it's a "piston slap" or not I have no idea. Whatever it is might not sound as bad if it was inside on old cast iron block....maybe.

Yea, I see what you mean! Re-reading my post it does sound like I meant that the block was aluminum - brain poot. Should have checked - once again.
Still applies - I don't think that the "slap" would sound as bad if it was in one of the "old cast iron" blocks as compared to the "deep-throated" Titan designs where the hollow under the TB amplifies it.

Hmmm,,, vvveeerrryyyyy interesting, now that you bring it up, I DO remember those days and the wrist pin noise. Huh, isn't that funny ? The things we forget, that all of a sudden come rushing back ? I KNEW that sound was familiar, now that you mention it. Wow, what OTHER memories come back along with the wrist pin noise from the late 60's, early 70's. High school, free love, burn your draft card, and WAY more importantly to me, 'burn your bra'. Oh buddy, THOSE were the days eh ? Thanks for the mammaries, er, uh, memories,,,,,
