What 4 sp trany do you have?
The wire should come from the left side (when sitting in the drivers seat) of the trany to the frame and plug into the main rear harness. That is how it was on both of my 81 trucks.

Have you verified that both bulbs are not burned out? What often happens is that one bulb will burn-out and it is not noticed. When the second bulb burns out, it is noticed. It is not uncommon to remove what may have been the original bulb(s) and find a dark yellowish paste on the base. This is the original dielectric grease used by the factory. With a soft cloth, remove as much of this from the socket as possible and replace the bulb. If you have dielectric grease, put a small amount on the base of the bulb to protect the electrical contacts.

There is also a point where two harnesses connect where dirty/bad connections can cause problems - LH rear corner, where the harness extending across the rear connects with the harness running the length of the truck.

Also, user-added trailer hitch wiring causes problems.

My BW T18 has the switch on the top-rear of the transmission IIRC.
