When you are towing heavy and a little car starts to pull out in front of you without realizing it, it is nice to know they will hear you when you blast at them. There are a ton of situations where I have been really glad to have it. People tend to take more notice if they hear a big rig sound vs a standard horn. With all of the noise and distraction in people's cars you need every tool you can get to keep yourself and your family safe.
Cowlick does a very thorough explanation of the mounting and completion of the project. I do wish there was an enclosure for the compressor for us Yankees with snow, slush and alt bathing the underside of the truck for 3 months a year. I am looking for a SS box about the right size or I will only but the tank and horns down under and mount the compressor under the jump seat like it is for my current Firestone system. It has worked great there for 16 years but it does get in the way once in a while when the seat is tilted up to stow other items on the floor. Viair makes numerous models of compressors depending upon demand and use cycle. For just horns their small model is ok but for reliable tire inflation more power would be recommended. Chances are that little car has their hip hop turned up so loud they don't even hear a regular horn. And I have been cut off or right on red-ed without stop and a cop sitting in line and the cops do nothing. Wife gets mad at me for blowing the horn as if it is my fault. Some of the prank videos capitalize on the element of surprise. You can sure ruin someones enjoyment of their latte at the outdoor cafe.
I absolutely get the air horns. Seven years towing a 40 foot fifth wheel full time all over the country. Drivers are listening to loud music or talking on their phones and not looking as they merge into traffic or drift into your lane. Awesome!
Airhorns are great and do have a practical purpose but they are secondary to the practicality of having on-board air and a tank. I can't count how many times I have inflated tires from the truck. Not just vehicle tires either. Two weeks ago it was wheel barrows while helping a neighbor lay sod. Before that it was a bunch of boy scout's bicycles during a mountain biking trip. Air mattresses, the list is endless.
As a follow-up, the compressor location was a concern for just the reasons stated. Being outside the frame rail exposes it to a lot of road grime in every season. So far so good though. The Viar has been flawless. I'm already planning another for the new truck but I will install the tank differently using U-bolts over the frame rails instead of drilling into the frame. But that's for a future thread.
Mounting an onboard compressor for tire inflation is my primary goal. Mostly for pulling other peoples trailers. I hate accepting the job of moving a trailer only to get there and find 3 tires at 50% inflation and 1 at 10%. Meanwhile the owner is oblivious to the fact there is even a fill valve on the wheel, none the less a required air pressure. The small cig lighter $15 compressor has to run 15 minutes on each tire. Time to change all that. Maybe never pull someone elses trailer!
