Good morning all, Friday my wife and I drove a few hours north (almost to Wisconsin) and picked up a new to me F250.
It's a 2001 XLT that only had 90k miles on it. It's very clean, drives great, and doesn't appear to have any issues more than needing some tires fairly soon.
Either way, I don't really have too many questions other than suspension. I've had a 5.4 for the last 12 years so I'm familiar with the modular family.
I will say I'm beyond pleased so far. I was really concerned about the mileage but best I can figure I'm averaging about 15. I do drive it pretty easy though.
Is it ok to talk about suspension in this thread? From what I've seen it's mostly just V10 owners and anything goes?
I was looking at getting a leveling kit to make it ride just a tad higher and get rid of the slight rake (absolutely do not want the front higher though).
So I was thinking about a 2.5" leveling kit.
The guy at 4 wheel parts said that can't be done since it's a leaf spring front. I have to put a 4 inch up front and 2.5" in the rear... basically I have to get a 4 inch lift kit...
However, when I go online, I can find 2.5" kits all day long.
4 wheel parts needs to fire that idiot. Like you saw online there are 2.5 in leveling kits all over the place. Most people that do the leveling kit use an f-350 4 in block in the rear as it tends to be a little low. But you do have a pretty good rake now but I'd measure your rear blocks tell us what they are. The factory block sits on a mounting block on the axle don't include that in your measurement just the block under the spring. Truck looks nice most of them up there the bodys are well ventilated by now.
Yeah I got pretty lucky with this one. The F150 it's replacing is very well ventilated, but it's been a good truck.
There's one little spot on the LH fender well that needs to be fixed before it gets out of hand. The paint is just starting to bubble, it's about the size of a quarter.
The 4 wheel jamboree is coming up in a month. I'm hoping they have a special and I can get a good percentage off. Right now I'm leaning pretty hard on the 2.5" level and 33" (or 285 / 295). Something between mud and a/t like the cooper a/t maxx.
Most of the trucks I've seen with the 2.5" level kit sit level or the front a tad high. If you have a suspension shop in your town they can give you a couple options to get the exact amount of lift you want. Re-arching the factory springs or an add a leaf. Both of those usually ride a little stiffer though.
It's fine to talk suspension here, or anything, really. In some ways, the V10 is unique, suspension wise. It's lighter than a diesel, and (slightly) heavier than a 5.4.
Love the truck - my '01 is sitting in front of my house on the street being neglected
Thanks guys. They also have a 2" option for the front level, at least pro comp does.
I have a place down the road that has a lot of wrecked super dutys. They're going to try and get me some F350 blocks so it doesn't sit high with the 2.5".
I'm pretty excited. The biggest change for me will come in the suspension, and the motor is very closely related to the 5.4.
Is there a better set of headers? I can see where mine has not had the exhaust manifold bolts changed, so if they're still going strong this time next year, I think a full exhaust may be in order.
Until then, I'll just plan on little bolt-ons.
You probably want to stay away from Hedman for headers also. Big thread on here regarding their socket fitting. If money were no object, I'd definitely get the Banks setup. But Thorley seems to have a decent set for quite a bit less.
