transmission service

2008 with 150,000 miles. Planning to change all fluids in diffs, transfer case and transmission. Anyone done this and have some tips? Front diff looks really tight to get cover off (no drain plug). Also, transmission looks tough because of no fill tube. Looks like some type of pump setup needed to get fluid back in.?

Any advice welcome.

I don't know much about changing the differential fluids, but am curious about it. I did the fluid in my 2010 Expy LTD based on this video:
The pan bolts under (over) the exhaust pipe are tough to get to but not impossible. Otherwise pretty straight forward. That video poster also has a video about how to check the fluid level.

As for filling the tranny, I bought a cheap crappy pump setup from Advance Auto which, as just about every reviewer said it would, broke halfway through. Not so broken that it wouldn't work but enough to be a PITA. I spent $6 on it which even with it breaking was worth it because there is no way to gravity flow fluid into it.

FWIW, I bought 8 QT of fluid from my local dealer (I needed Mercon LV which was not available otherwise). Between what i spilled and what I ended up getting into the tranny, 8QT worked for me.

Good luck. I look forward to others' experiences with changing diff fluid.

Here's what I have done on every vehicle (auto trans) that I have owned for 30 years....

I either drain the torque converter (if so equipped with a plug) or disconnect the trans cooler line at the radiator (which is what you have to do), fill the pan with fresh fluid, my wife starts the engine and when 2-3 quarts drain into a bucket, she shuts it off, I refill the pan and repeat until the fluid is clear and in case of the f150, 14 quarts of fresh fluid is in.

The problem with the method is this transmission has a thermostat. It is just going to recirculate the fluid without flushing it. And there is no drain plug in the torque converter.

You need a heated flush machine to change all of the fluid. Some Ford dealers have them.

You are right Mark....I forgot to mention that I usually bypass the thermostat...On mine, its on the outside of the tranny so its easy.
