im not sure how much it costs but putting lower gears in it would help out a lot, i would say around 4.11:1 - 4.56:1, im guessing not quite sure.

Get an RV-type camshaft,a set of headers, and upgrade the rest of your 302's exhaust system. You might even try to have the stock heads mildly ported. This should help your 302 become a stump-puller for under $2,000.Good luck.

You can't port the heads or put a cam in it unless you convert it to mass air. Of course you can do it but it won't gain any hp..

best thing for a 302 for pulling is gears. The next thing I would do is exhaust!

I agree with adding lower gears, but you don't necessarily need to switch to mass air(vs. speed density electronics) if you choose a mild RV-type camshaft that is "computer-compatible." Many aftermarket cam companies offer EFI302 cams that work well with speed density systems. My EFI302 Bronco has an aftermarket cam in it,and it did add horsepower&torque to it.Keeping the lobe separation between 113-115 degrees&shouldn't be a problem. For an all-out horsepower EFI302 truck engine,I'd add mass air,but for stump-pulling duties you'll need torque more than horsepower.A mass air conversion kit would push the upgrades in excess of that $2,000 figure. All said, exhaust &gearing upgrades are probably the first step to take.
