No, won't be able to see. If the TC didn't take too hard of a hit, it might be OK. Crap shoot.
An engine stand can be used to hold the trans:
Yeah I got an offer on a whole 96 4x4 7.3 with the E4OD for $500...whole truck. Motors only got a bad HPOP apparently but won't know more till I check it out in person next week. Alegedly it's stuck deep in the woods which is why it's priced so low, more or less a "get this out of my yard and I'll give ya a heck of a deal on it" type of things. Depending on just how bad a shape the truck is in and how many more broken things I find in my current trans over the weekend I may just play the swap things around to make one good trans. Who knows cross that bridge this weekend. I still can't fathom a good way of getting the trans veritable like that though to get it on a stand in the first place. My best idea was the engine hoist idea on the bell housing with eye bolts but Lifting by those two bell housing holes scares the heck outta me cause this trans is H E A V Y!!
Got the trans up in the air vertical by my eye bolt idea no problem....so this is what I found. Pump came off pretty easily, not too snugg, not too loose. My new slide hammer I purchased to do this job made it a breeze. Here's a picture of the pump...seams good to me. Don't see any other pieces broke besides the stator shaft.
Inside of trans behind the pump looked ok as well except for one part. I circled the area that concerns me. It looks to be a big snap ring of some sort to me but isn't shaped like a normal one which leads me to believe its not a snap ring and is a part that was broke in the fall...even worse I could not locate the broke piece if it is indeed broken.
I also notice grooves in what I'm assuming is copper sleves of some sort. They look to be normal but just in case here's a pic of what they look like as well.
Besides that snap ring thing the rest looked pretty good, didn't see any scaring or dents or anything out of the ordinary behind the pump. Behind the oil pan looked pretty good as well, it was shifting and moving the valve like it should...only part that concerned me behind the pan was a part that was located just above the shifter linkage attached to the trans. No clue what it's call as I stated before I'm ignorant in transmissions so here's a picture of what I'm talking about
The damage looks to be from a rotational impact of some sort not a hitting the floor impact but again I don't know jack about transmissions and how they should/shouldn't look inside. Anyways that's all I could find wrong based on how far I tore it apart, if any of what I stated above looks broke or seams to be normal please let me know! Thanks guys!
Don't see any probs, all normal. Might as well get a replacement pump, easier that way. You need a press to R&R the stator shaft from the pump and new pump will have the shaft on it ready to drop in.
The last pic is of the drive shell and direct drum. A little beat up/wear there but normal.
Wow what a relief!! Dodged a bullet big time just now...but I'm not out of the woods just yet because the torque converters still unknown. Do you think if i drained all the oil out of it and shook it I could here possible fins that have broken off? Or would shaking cause other issues with it? If I did install this torque converter back on truck and a fin was indeed broken could it reek havoc on the rest of the transmission?
As far as the pump goes I'm going to get the upgraded F5 pump like mentioned above by FORDF250HDXLT. Thanks again for the input guys! Huge weight off my shoulders for now with your good news!
Don't even waste your time with the torque converter. It's impossible to check for damage without cutting it open. Just get a new one, E4OD converters are very cheap.

No, I don't.

Shaking it will only tell you it's a heavy part. It won't tell you anything about what's inside. The only way to know if that converter is good or not is to get it cut open and inspect it.
I planned on getting an upgraded torque converter but not till in the future when I did the bigger injectors...I'll have to do some pricing out. If I put this one back in and it turns out a fin is broke would it cause damage thorugh out the rest of the trans? That's my biggest worry about putting this one back on at this point but would hate to buy another stock converter now because the upgraded one is out of my price range then buy the upgraded one later on and having a hardly used converter....
Well looks like it's getting a upgraded converter sooner then expected then....but couldn't the opposite happen as well then? Like if something in the trans is broke that I can't see with all I took off right now and I put a new converter in, couldn't those broken pieces be flushed through the new converter and ruin it?
