Ranger Jack

Hello guys,

I just bought a '93 Ranger XLT 4x4. It didn't come with a spare tire (which I will get from a salvage yard), but I have a question about the jack. The truck didn't come with the owner's manual so I have no idea if I have all of the jack parts and how to properly jack the truck. From what I have seen, there is a small hydraulic jack behind the passenger seat and a long rod for the jack next to the engine hood prop rod (in the engine bay of course). Are these the only two parts of the jack (i.e. am I missing any parts)? Also, the hydraulic jack is only about 8 inches tall. How far will this jack extend and where are the jacking points on the truck? The truck (body) is about 15 inches off the ground and it doesn't seem like the jack will reach that high. Thanks for any help.

If you really want to, you can try and keep all the parts for the factory jack, but really, the only part you need is one to lower the spare with. That should be the long rod, and one that fits perpendicular on the end (on my 2000 it was the lug wrench, gives you something to crank) Those parts can be replaced with a 1/2" drive ratchet and a long extension. I junked my factory jack a long time ago and mounted one of those compact floor jacks in the front corner of my bed... It works a lot better, it's way faster, and I feel better about the truck not falling off the jack with a tire off...

Thanks Rancha9,

I'll consider scrapping the factory jack. It doesn't look to stable anyway. Where are the actual jacking points on a Ranger? Since the body is so high off the ground, the only place I can think of is the axle. Is that right?

I believe that on my '98 4x4 the jack points are on the axle in the rear. On the front, there is a bracket sticking forward on the lower control arm that is the jack point.

The little factory jack has three or four telescoping pieces. It's range is more than enough to change a flat tire.

How is the spare lowered on an 01? I don't have a manual either. Thanks

Right between your tailgate and your rear bumper, there is a hole (Now, you may have a spare tire lock, which looks like a plastic plate with a keyhole on it...) in that hole there is a 1/2" drive square hole. One piece of your jack fits in the hole, and then your lugwrench (On my 2000 is was my lug wrench) fits over the end of it, makes a little crank handle, and you just crank the beast down, remove the retainer from the inside, and tada, you have a spare. Don't forget to crank the retainer back up sp you don't drag it down the road (If I had a dollar for everytime I've seen that...)
