5 speed knocking

I have a 1991 ranger 4.0 5 speed. It is making a loud knocking noise in all the gears except for fourth. I believe it is the input shaft bearing? I was going to rebuild the whole thing but then I found a input shaft repair sleeve on rock auto. Was wondering if it would be worth trying first, And how difficult a job it would be?

Contrary, the 'counter shaft' is engaged and loaded in every gear but 4th. It is used in OD to transfer power to the rearmost gear, which transfers then to the OD gearset. It is used in all reduction gears. In 4th the input shaft and output shaft are locked together, so the counter gear is not loaded in any way. The knocking is likely due to failed needle bearings internal to the counter shaft gear.
I'd bet on counter shaft bearings. The input shaft bearing is loaded in all gears, forward and reverse. You do the math.
