I have a 2000 single cab ranger 2 wheel drive with a 2.5L and the 5 speed manual trans with just over 188,000 miles on it. Truck does have a receiver hitch on it with a 2" ball. Don't know the brand, as it was on the truck when I bought it.
Son needs to move part of his airplane project, mainly a 10 foot wing (about 200lbs?) and his engine another 250 lbs give or take a few. We will need to move it about 120 miles, gental phills, and highway roads with a few small towns.
We are thinking of renting a 12' open Uhaul trailer. Do anyone see any major problems with the ranger pulling it?
I own a 1998 2wd Ranger with the extended cab and a fiberglass camper shell. My truck has a 3.0 V-6 and a 5 speed manual with 264,500 miles on it. I have towed a friends snowmobile trailer on a 50 mile one way trip several different times. The double wide enclosed trailer had two Bombardier snowmobiles in it, one weighing about 500 pounds and the other 400 pounds. I have no idea what the empty trailer weighed. (8.5 feet wide, 10 feet long) My little truck had some difficulty on the longer hills, some of which required that I drop down to 3rd gear but other than that she did just fine. I was careful about my speed and kept it about 45 MPH as I knew that I couldn't stop that load in a hurry.
Thanks for the info Dan, since we're going to borrow my neighbors trailer, we are going to use his truck also. It will save wear and tear on my Ranger.
Nice of the neighbor to let you use his tow vehicle. Since Murphy's Law is still in effect, make sure you check & air up All this rigs tires, including spares for the tow vehicle & trailer & have jacks & lug wrenches that'll fit both. Since this'll be a hot weather tow, check all the fluids, belts & hoses. If it's also going to be a high speed tow, I'd also check & or lube the wheel bearings. Let us know how it goes.
