Hi, I'm new to this site, could anyone help me on a technical question. I want to replace the rear seal on my 1986 f250, and would like to know what i need to do, I'm a bit knowledgeable on mechanic, and I know it's a two parts seal, but is there something I should careful to remove. Thank for the help;
I suppose that you are planning to change the rear seal of the the engine, right? What engine do you have, a 351 W?
If it is the 351W I would say it seems to be the best to pull out the whole enging 'cause you have to remove the oilpan and the rear main bearing cap to install the "Rope seal" . The best is you read the procedure of changing the rear seal in one of the "How to rebuild" books by HP books. Also you should ask in one of these chapters, I think you will get more information there: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/f...p?s=&forumid=9
If you still have probs sent me a mail and I will sent a few pics. (Gasoline engines)

Hi Jans, it's 460 engines (7.5)' and i have drop the transi, and will be able to remove the rear seal, my problem is how to remove it without removing the engine, any help on it will help.
Thank;
I too have some kind of leak coming from the rear seal on my 300 six. When I take the truck on the highway at high speeds 70-85 mph, it leaks when I stop. I can't really tell if it is coming from the oil pan or the rear main. Although I have had the oil pan bolts loosen up after a long run. Any ideas?

Elmer,
wow, a 460....great but if it's the same as with the 351W (with the rope seal) I think it's very hard to change the seal. On the pic. which I have the crankshaft is removed to install a new seal.
I have absolutely no idea how to make it without removing the crank. Maybe there is a split lip seal available to convert from the rope type. With that seal, also a two peace seal, it is maybe possible to change it w/o removing the crank.
<--- 460 guy ok so I got the same truck and all and I just changed mine when I had the tranny out it's a big big big huge pain in the butt. ok what you do is you're going to have to have an engine hoist you need to lift the motor half way out of the truck you shouldn't have to disconnect anything but the exhaust from the motor, I don't have all my vacuum lines hooked to anything so I don't know about those, get it far enough that you can take the oil pan completely off. Next you have to remove the rear main cap. one piece of the seal will already be out because it is inside the main cap. the other piece is in the crank what you need is either the little tool you can get from about any parts store or off a snap-on truck something like that. or a really really small screw. then a really really small drill bit and be very carefull drill a little way into the seal. then thread the tool in or a screw the tool has a cord to pull the seal out with or use a pair of plyers on the screw. once you get that out then you can put a new one in, also a pain in the butt.
get some sort of lubrication, vasoline, engine assembly lube, motor oil. I used assembly lube worked for me. rub that on the peice of the seal you're putting above the crank. check the direction's and make sure ;you're going to be putting iyt in the right way it should say in the box with the seal. now set it on the crank and just work it around in the hole carefully you don't want to nick the main journal or get the seal going in there in a way that it rips. once you get that in slap some lube on the other seal set it in the main cap and oil the main bearing a little and bolt it back up be sure to torque it down. 95-105 ft lbs. then go back together with a new oil pan gasket put it back down and have fun getting the tranny back in. but if I may say so if you don't have the tranny out already it would be much easier to just pull the motor and change it on an engine stand. oh and in 86 if it were a 351 it should be a one piece rear main and then it would be all easy just wanted to say that. have fun
