OEM Air Cleaner Help

I have been scouring the Internet for months trying to locate an OEM air cleaner for my 1986 F-250 7.5/460 without any success to get me past the visual inspection for California smog.

Does anyone have a line on a salvage yard that specializes in these trucks or know of a make, model, and year for a compatible car that will fit, the truck has the original carburetor installed? Without the stock air cleaner installed the smog shops out here won’t even test the truck.

Thanks in advance.

Air Cleaner

On e-bay, I typed in "Used Ford 460 Air Cleaner"
1971 Lincoln Mark III 460 Air Cleaner Assembly | eBay
It may have to be modified a bit but looks like a good start. If it's only a "visual inspection", you may get away with it.
I would bet that the inspectors don't know the difference between a '71 air cleaner vs. an '86 air cleaner.
Install it as purchased so it retains the "used look".
Also...have a look here for some good info on factory air cleaners :

Do you need the entire air cleaner or misc. parts?

And...be aware that in CA it's the sellers responsibility that the vehicle passes the smog test.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is well beyond the realm of "seller responsibility".

I don't envy those who are forced to live by CA EPA emissions regulations as they are nothing more than revenue generators designed to fill coffers. The U.S. restricts emissions on passenger vehicles but fails to regulate diesel emissions which are the primary offenders. I guess the transportation lobbyists on Capital Hill are doing their job...albeit sad.

Thanks to everyone for the response. I actually need the entire air cleaner and snorkel. When I purchased the truck about two years ago the previous owner had an Eddlebrock air cleaner installed on the truck.

I had the engine, transmission, and front suspension rebuilt about 2,000 miles ago and installed a rebuilt carburetor. This year I was required to have the smog check done at a test only station. Without the original air cleaner installed on the truck or one that resembles it they won't even test the truck.

I am about ready to sign the pink slip, complete a bill of sale gifting the truck to my son in Arizona and mail the paperwork to him and have him register the truck Arizona, then mail Arizona plates to me so I can once again drive my truck.

Huh? So I guess particulate filters, low sulphur diesel and DEF have nothing to do with emissions regulations?

In Ohio, all diesel powered vehicles above 1590 GVW are exempt from emissions testing. So that means that all of the school buses, the tractors towing 53' trailers are exempt. These vehicles comprise over 50% of Ohio's vehicular traffic ! Please...do not spout Greenscape.

Be aware that in CA you have 30 days to register a vehicle.

If you get stopped by the polizei with your truck wearing those AZ plates, get ready to pay a STIFF fine...and then you'll have to register it in CA .. or else!

The junkyards that I go to have quite a few air cleaners but I am not familiar with which air cleaners fit which engines etc., and most are not 460's. Is your carb a 2v or 4v? If anyone here has some info on what will fit I may be able to help.

I'm mostly a diesel guy and I6 guy so I just don't know what I'm looking at with the V8 gassers.

Those vehicles still had to meet the Federal standard when sold. I would suggest that you complain to you state reps to push for testing if it bothers you so much. I have a friend in a neighboring state that has been trying to get his F-150 through emissions testing for over a year. The truck is an in-town work vehicle that hardly is used and the money that the state wants him to put into it is ridiculous. It runs fine but does not meet the standard for the tailpipe test. It is over 30 years old for cryin' out loud.

I have no idea what " Greenscape " is.

Uh huh...

So the cop looks at his CA drivers license and then...guess what happens next?

In the mid 1980's, a pal of mine owned a 1977 Ranchero 400.

In order to get around the fact that all the smog parts had been removed, he registered it in Alabama, cuz back then, this could be done over the phone, I kid you not!

But when he got stopped by the CHP, it was doubly embarrassing because...not only did he not have an AL drivers license, but he was attending CHP training school in Sacramento!

He had to put all the smog crap back on the Ranchero and register it in CA

And then soon after, he quit the CHP a week before graduating (!), went to work for Keith Black rebuilding Packard-Merlin aircraft engines for P-51 Mustangs.
