If the problem is a slipping clutch there will be wear of both the friction disc, and the opposing surfaces, the plates. If the problem is a slipping belt, then there will be belt wear. For me there any squeal, I just noticed that the A/C wasn't effective a higher RPMs. Went to airflow only until I got home and checked the gap first due to 200k miles of service. I know you homed in on the clutch, and the gap is always the first thing to check, but belt or bearing could also be in the check mix.
