AC caught on fire

Driving through rush hour traffic the other day I started to smell something. Figured someone in front of me was burning a clutch up or something.
Then the smoke billowed out from under my hood. Pulled over and found the AC clutch was on fire. Thanks to Mt Dew the fire was quickly extinguished. 2 hours later I had a new clutch installed.
I'm sure my AC compressor is shot but that gets to wait until next spring to be fixed.

My question is this. I have the new clutch on and disconnected the power supply so I dont have it engage the compressor again. Am I good to keep running it like this or do I need to put the compressor on the top of my to do list? BTW I did try to engage the AC with the new clutch and it would lug the engine down heavily and start to smoke so I'm pretty sure it is the compressor.

As long as the pulley still spins fine I think you are good to go. I am in the same boat, my compressor is seized up and I have not swapped it out yet. For the time being I just unplugged the clutch. No problems, just no A/C.

You also have no Defrost if the compressor doesnt run... and winters comin.

I like the big thick rubber bed mat. mine has one too. was that a factory option? it was very helpful the other day when i had to take a bunch of scrap brick and concrete to the dump.

Yikes! Good thing you pulled over! A less attentive driver would probably have a burned up truck now!
I think, as others have said, that if the pulley spins okay you should be fine to run it for a while that way.

You still have defrost you just don't get the added dehumidification that the A/C adds. You will still get lost of hot air up on the windshield it just isn't as dry so it may not keep the windshield from fogging up quite as well. I have driven lost of vehicles with no A/C (or non-working A/C) through many a winter and it works, just not quite as well as it would if the A/C were functioning. In fact until last weekend, my truck hasn't had functioning A/C since I bought it 2 1/2 years ago.

Been running 2 years like this now.
=)

It will be fine. Just leave it unplugged.

New compressor will come with a new pulley/clutch.

Some of the pulleys have a 2 bearing system and some have a 1 bearing system.
There is some interesting info for you. =)

I have no idea, I was still in high school when my truck was made. I like it though! Keeps the rhino lining looking new.

Next question? Orielly's has a brand new ac compressor for $199 but they are on ebay for under $100. Anyone have any luck with these?

I'd go with a new one from a part store for warranty purpose
