The input/output shafts, there is a small roller bearing that supports the two shafts together. If that blew up/welded itself it will have the two shafts stuck together permanently. I've seen it before, especially if the transmission gets low on fluid.

See the little caged bearing in the lower right corner? That is what supports the two shafts when put together. It could be the slider/hub/brass blocker ring also. I would try to wiggle the brass like I mentioned above on the 4th gear side(near the front of case). If that brass is stuck, then that could be the problem. If it is free floating then could be that little bearing.

These transmission are really not that hard to tear apart. I did my first one about a year ago. I've been doing old toploaders for years so I know my way around a transmission. But some simple hand tools and laying things out in order will get it back together again.

I would suspect the trash on your drain plug was material from your shift forks.

Started to disassemble the tranny and I got stuck on the nut holding in the countershaft. Tried knocking it with a chisel and putting a pry bar on a socket but no luck, didn't even budge. Biggest problem is that I can't hold the tranny steady and get good leverage on the bar. Would be awesome if I had access to a impact gun.

Did you knock the staked portion of the nut out? If you've having trouble holding the shaft, you can try moving both shift collars over and locking it into two gears at once.

Yeah I put it into gear and unstaked the nut and all, but I was pretty much forced into picking up an impact gun which did the trick. I'll post progress as I go. Would really love to have a rebuild kit but the local parts store didn't carry it and I really don't have the time to wait for shipping. In desperate need of transportation.
Thanks guys

I marked the nut so that when I put it all back together, I turned it to the same spot. I figure that is close enough to keep it torqued where it is suppose to be. Then restaked it again to hold its position.

Doubt you can get much stuff locally for this transmission. I needed forks for mine and had to order them through a buddy who owns a transmission shop. He didn't have anything in stock for something like this either. Took about a week, as some stuff had to come from the west coast. Mine was not in bad shape, but just crusty from sitting around so I pulled it apart to wash it up. It is a different animal compared to what I'm used to as for coming apart, but I just kept everything in order and was fine.

Trying to get this to separate which is I assume where the input and main shift separate? Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I can't get them to separate completely, just this much which this does allow them to turn independently and not be locked in together anymore. I've removed everything there is to move and tried to follow a guide as best I could understand.

According to this (My Transmission Teardown - The Ranger Station Forums) once you unbolt the front bearing retainer, the input shaft should just come right out.

If that's not the case, I suspect whatever caused your locking up issue is also preventing the shafts from separating. You might have to get a bit angry with it...

Yeah think I might have to hike both feet up on the bell housing and show it something. I'll save that for the morning when I'm good and fresh. Thanks for all your help guys, you're great!

UPDATE

So I got the shafts to separate and emptied the case. Currently trying to get 2nd gear off the main shaft but my garbage snap ring pliers are failing me. So I'll pick up a pair in the morning and get right back to it. I'm checking out the bearings as I go and they honestly don't look beat up. The 4th gear synchro was pretty beat up though. Lots of trash inside my case which I suspect is my problem. Pics to come

Keep in mind I believe some of the gears are pressed on.

Wtf

Got my tranny apart this weekend, cleaned it and started to reassemble it. Looks like the input shaft is contacting the main shift and binding it up because I'm still having the same problem. I know I had some broken things when I split the shafts but I don't really know what. Got to looking at this rebuild kits and it looks like there's a needle bearing that goes inside the synchro ring for the input shaft to ride on which would eliminate this friction I'm getting.... So do the older models just not have this or is this like a later reinvented idea that's thrown into the rebuild kits.... Everything looks fine this is my only problem. Really don't want to buy a whole rebuild kit for this one bearing, if anyone knows where I can order that(if that's what I need) that will be great.

Input needle thrust bearing? Looks like I can only find it in a kit

If you can finds an exploded diagram of the transmission, you may be able to order it from a dealer if you can get a part number.
