"By putting the trans in park or in gear (or by shutting the engine off in neutral, or any gear for that matter) you're stopping the transfer case input from spinning so you can shift without grinding. Because it's not synchro'd you might need a small amount (a few inches) of forward/rearward movement (provided by the hill) to get everything to line up."
