Gas Tank Strap Bolt question!

When I pulled my rusty ole gas tank I found that the straps holding the tank hinged on the running boards on one end and was attached with a couple of bolts on the other. Of course these two bolts were rusted and I had to cut them off with a grinder. It looks to me that these two bolts were put in before the strap was was made, bent, and welded. My question, what or how can a put a bolt in it's place to replace it? There is not enough room to insert a new bold the same size. Any ideas out there? Thanks, Dave

Not familiar with your strap there but if there are some spot welds in it maybe you can cut them out, get your new bolt in, and plug weld the strap back together.

If it is a bolt you want to put into a spot where you cannot get behind it you can cut a slot next to the hole so a carriage bolt can slide into the hole.

Or you can do what I did. I drilled out the welds and replaced them with bolts.

Thanks for "blazing the road" ahead of me Joe! That's just too easy. Are you still headed to Lincoln to move your daughter this weekend? If you still need a hand I should be around Friday afternoon or Saturday morning!
