Low Compression -- '66 240
I have a recently acquired 1966 F100, with a 240 manual and Autolite 1bbl. It ran well enough for the first month, but recently was backfiring and sputtering and couldn't hold an idle well or at all. Now, it'll turn over, but to get and stay running the gas pedal needs a lot of attention. I took apart the carburetor and rebuilt it, adjusting the float in particular which seemed to have been out of whack. Still didn't fix the problem, and a mechanic checked the compression which seems to be low (in the 50s) across all the cylinders.
What should be the next step? Valve adjustment? Just trying to figure out how serious of a problem this may be in order to get the truck running dependably.
