1996 4.9 5 speed starts great in the morning, but as I run errands and start the truck when the engine is hot, the starter turns much slower. there is no heat shield on the catconverter, and the starter is very hot, I think from the cat converter. Looking for a heat shield that I can attach to the converter, or an insulating wrap/heat shield for the starter. local supply dealers haven't helped so far......
Thanks!!!!!
BTW, buddy of mine borrowed my truck to do some hauling. he drives chevys, but was truly amazed by the power of the 6. maybe another convert.
Have you checked your battery to see if it might be overcharging? Also how old is the battery? Also make sure and check the ground connection from the battery to the motor. Have you checked the starter relay to see if it's getting hot while driving? (The one near the battery) If the connection is'nt good on the battery side of the relay it can get hot while the alt. is charging. It might just be a shot starter, but a dragging starter sounds like a battery problem to me, in my experience. Hope any of this helps.
i kinda have a similar problem. my 92 f150 xlt 351 starts great in the morning but after it gets warmed up and any time later on in the day it will crank fine but it takes a while to turn over. does anyone know what it could be?
When the problem first started, I checked the battery, the terminals, the relays, the relay connections, the wiring that I could trace, and everything was OK. I cleaned the terminals and connections while I was there, but the problem remains.

just a thought, is the connection on the starter clean and tight? this can have the same effect? no bare spots on the cable that might be touching the frame ect.? (simple things first)
I had a car one time that started fine when cold, but was hard to turn over when the car warmed up. In that case it was worn bearings in the starter motor
