I would start with getting the system scanned for trouble codes. After the check engine light has been on there will be a code or codes stored that should lead you in the right direction.
Check out the routing of your plug wires for the #1,2, and 3 cylinders and make sure they are seated correctly. I have a 97 Explorer AWD V8 which I just bought at 100K miles. The plug wires for #1 and #3 cylinders were melted against the exhaust manifold so I replaced the entire set. I started it up and experienced something similar to what you are encountering and 2 of the plug wires were not seated correctly...pushed them in a bit until they clicked...fixed the miss problem.
Yeah, I just had the same problem, but with the #4 cylinder, and it happened twice, first time was a cracked plug, the other time I am not so sure, it came up as "miss on #4" and I changed the plug , cleard the code and it is doing ok now,I wonder why it did it twice in a row?
