Ooops... I think we found it. I don't recall seeing any freewheeling in my fan, but I can look again.
I checked a couple of others. Unless we all have bad fans. They do the same as mine. My dads gasser chevy stops immediately, but all the SD's I checked free wheel just briefly
How are you determining that it is running too hot? 225 EOT is not unheard of under load.
Torque pro. The dummy gauge on the dash will climb to the top. (Had gotten to the red before I got torque pro so I have no idea of EOT at that time.) But have never boiled over. Would sit for maybe 3 mins and stock gauge would return to mid range. To get the gauge up that high I had to be pulling our 16ft tandem axle scout trailer (lots of old canvas tents and cast iron, have no idea of a weight though.)
Been fighting a coolant issue on '02 F250 4x4 with 7.3. Truck runs hot when under load (ie towing, or ac running on a hot day going down the road). Will sit and idle all day with ac on high and 100° outside. I hear my fan at cold start as normal but that's the only time I hear it. Still has original water pump, fan clutch and radiator. I know all three could stand to be replaced with 340,000 on it. But can't afford to do it all at once. What are your thoughts?
Btw New to posting, I have always been able to search and find the solution.
had an 02 last week same symptoms. ended up replacing a/c condenser, radiator, thermostat, water pump, serpentine belt, tensioner, idler, upper hose (ambulance hose) and cooling system flush.
ac fins were about 75% flat, water pump squeaking, both pulleys on tensioner squeaking, idler grinding, radiator 90% plugged between fins and about 75% covered with debris. calcium build up internally at about 0.020"
The fan has a clutch attached to it, and it will spin with the engine when running, but will begin to spin MUCH faster when the Temps get to a certain point. Hence the Roaring you get when it's working.
Sounds like it's still there....Could be getting weak......But as BigB56 said, 220+ on your EOT is not unusual under load, as long as it doesn't park there and stick. Your not running tunes or anything?
And your stock gage is a Brass turd, as far as accuracy goes. the senders are strictly Go/No Go gizmos and they crap out all the time.

The oil temps will usually drop back down if I back out of it or sit and idle. Fixing to go on a long trip and I'll be really watching it then.

Yes I know the stock guage is crap, just haven't added an aftermarket. For tunes, I had a SuperCraps programmer years ago that got stolen so that "50hp" is stuck in there. But truck has always ran cool til now.
