Cleaning filter message/fuel milage
Cleaning filter message/fuel milage
Hey guys! Just bought my truck a week ago 2013 f350 drw. I ran a 160 mile round trip yesterday to pick up my dad's boat and saw the cleaning filter message twice. Running empty up and down small hills 55-60 mph I was averaging about 15mpg according to the Guage. After hooking to the boat and coming home now I'm showing 11.4mpg. The boat may weigh 4-5k pounds. I didn't expect that kinda drop with that light a boat. No cruise control and maybe 4-5 down shifts to 5th gear. My vin says it's due for a flash/update for the system and one is for I believe a exhaust sensor. I've put 300-400 miles on the truck since I got it and have seen the filter cleaning message 3 times. Two being yesterday. Does this sound about normal? One thing I did forget to mention is the truck has 35's on it also. Should I go on in for the update? Any possibility it could have something to do with what I'm experiencing? Or is the just the beast and it's acting normal? I've seen people on here reporting a lot better milage or either about the same towing a lot heavier. And I know my tires are gonna have some effect just didn't think that much. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
It's hard to pin down the emissions stuff, it's completely unpredictable.
If it were me, I'd drive the truck (after you get the update) for 6 months before I would form an opinion on whether there's anything wrong with it.
You can request the "oasis" history, might interest you.
Do you know the history of the truck? Helps to know how it was used before.

I have no idea of the trucks history. I'm at the dealership now. Should be finished up in about 30 min. And I honestly have no idea if I shut down during a regen. I'm assuming that I did just due to lack of knowledge the first time. Only drove about 4 miles after the message. The second and third time I'd say no, unless it ran a whole lot longer than it should have. I drove probably 45 min after both 2nd and 3rd messages.
My 12 would take 10-15 miles to complete a regen. For some reason my 16 takes a little longer. When not towing, I generally regen about once per tank of fuel (240ish miles). That's semi in town driving. I was towing pretty heavy Saturday (interstate) and went over 400 miles before a regen.
