This has probably been beat to death but here goes anyway. I have an 85 F150 2X4 I6/4od. I'm running 235x75x15's now but want to go to ~30" tires later. I just swapped out the rearend. It had 2.47 gears and I swapped in a late model Bronco rear with 3.55 L/S. The new rear has a plug, I'm guessing for sensor ring. Question is what would it take to modify my speedo to work with the ring? Or would it just be better to swap speedo gears? What speedo gear would I need?
Thanks
Keith
Keith, Swapping speedo gears is a 5 min job. You need a 3/8" wrench to remove the locking plate thingie and pull the cable with gear on end out of the case. The gear is plastic with a metal c clip at the base. Pull the clip and the gear slips off.
Count the teeth on the gear, (I suspect you have 16) Find an 18T and you will be close. I used to pick them up on junkyarding trips. They will be left hanging on the speedo cables, (easy pull) for you.
Thanks John.. That's kinda what I was thinking of doing. Just read somewhere that it was possible to upgrade the speedo to use the ring and didn't know if that was better or not.
jumping to 3.55's your speedo will be running faster than the trucks actual speed. by almost 10 mph, maybe a little less with the 30" tires. more teeth on the drive gear slows down the speedo.
http://www.steeda.com they are about 10 bucks a gear but I'd go John's way of the junkyard.
btw something I noticed when I did the research before changing mine was that the more teeth the gear has the greater the pitch of the teeth which will result in a shorter life of the gear.
