Lots of 5.0 owners reporting early oil consumption - a situation that seems to correct itself in most cases after the first few thousand miles. What has your oil change history been?

Above is a poll taken on another forum to document other's experiences with oil consumption with their 5.0 engines...

I have a 2013 with a 5.0 and it used a little oil for the first 6000 miles or so. Now it uses none.

Some engines consume oil, and that's not necessarily a bad thing either. Most manufacturers consider it normal unless it's using more than a quart every thousand miles or so. I wouldn't be happy with that, but most of those that consume oil don't use that much.

I remember this issue on the Mustang forum back when I had my '11. Mine never burnt oil, but there were lots that did. The engine is largely the same, so it doesn't surprise me that this affects F150s too.

I probably would not be upset if I had an engine that burned a quart every 2-3 thousand miles. At least you know the rings/cylinders are getting lubed (or presume that's where it's going). On older engines, it might be coming out other places...

I think most manufacturers have a set limit on what they consider to be normal oil usage. It's probably higher than most people think, but it would be worth finding out exactly what it is from the service department.

I know that my X5 has used oil from day one, at about a quart every 3000 miles or so. It's 13 years old now, and the usage has remained steady at that rate the entire time. According to BMW, and other owners, that's actually not bad for that particular engine.

And it used to be so much worse. Back when I was a kid, my first job was pumping gas at a full service gas station. This was early 80's I guess. Anyway, just part of the routine was while you were pumping gas, you'd check the oil and most always you'd add half a quart or so. And just put it on the customer's account.

Yes, I grew up in friggin Mayberry.

Yeah. I remember those days. Older engines were a lot more "loose". I think for those older engines, a moderate amount of oil use was probably a good thing, because you knew that he oil was "getting around". It also provided a built-in oil change interval. 1 quart every 1000 miles = a full change every 5000 miles.

Have you taken it to the dealer? My 6.2 F250 was using about 2 quarts in 3k miles. There was a TSB on it, replaced a baffle and all new plugs. Time will tell if it works.

I am considering trading it for a 5.0 F150 and I find this thread.....ugh.
