Cleaning T18

I just took the top off to inspect the inside of a T18 transmission I have in the garage. All the hard parts look pretty good as far as I can tell, no rounded or broken teeth. My only concern is, there is a little sludge on the inside along with a few chuncks of gasket from the top cover. It looks like a little dust mixed with the oil that was in the transmission. I would like to try and flush it out the best I can withought taking it apart. Could I just hose the inside with brake cleaner and pop the cover back on and top it off with oil or would that damage it?

I would have to ask are you checking it over to install and use in a short time or just look it over and put it back in the corner?
If sitting I would pull out the big chunks of gasket, close it up and put in corner.

If going to use I don't think I would use brake or carb cleaner as it will remove the oil from the parts, read no lubing of parts.
I would drain the oil out, leave the plug out of the bottom and pour diesel fuel in the top to flush it out.
Let it sit with out the drain plug a day or so to drain then fill with oil.

I would not flush it with any type of solvent. Like was said drain it, put new oil in, and let it go. I would not even put the diesel fuel in it.

There is a magnet inside that picks up metallic particles and sludge can tend to form there. You might mechanically scrape out what you can if you can inside of there, otherwise leaving it there won't hurt anything.

Any little pieces of gasket or foreign material will get destroyed as it's eaten by the spinning gears.
