Hi all,
I noticed this a while ago, but I didn't think much of it. I have an oil drip from my oil pan drain plug- its not really drippING, but there is a small stain where I park it and sometimes there is a droplet on the plug. Also, the area between the engine and the tranny is moist with oil sometimes, especially that little cover over the flywheel. Could this be something really bad? There is no appreciable loss of oil judging by the dipstick. I didn't change the oil last, in fact I put very few miles on the truck and just got it a few months ago, so I have not changed the oil yet. Is it possible that the sleazy dealership I bought it from put oil that was too light in? By the way, I tightened the drain plug, it wasn't loose and it didn't seem to do anything.
Thanks
Is this on the drain plug? I doubt the sceevy auction joint I got the truck from did anything but drain and fill, they weren't gonna go ordering any gaskets.
I agree with the guys above also. What i do is flip the copper gasket around on the plug every oil change, seats it again nice. Never had to replace them yet on any of my vehicles.

Yes it's on the drain plug. They are only a couple of dollars. For the short money I just change it out.
Will do. I'm at around 3k miles since I bought the truck, so I'll probably do an oil change anyway. But, since we're already half way through winter, and I don't feel like dropping a load of $, I think I'll just get dino.
Jack, You may want to up grade to one of these, you'll never have to replace a washer again, and it makes oil changes a lot easier. Replacement O-rings for Diesel Engines

I would hate to have a stick hit that valve open in the middle of no where !!! I guess it would be good if you stayed on good roads though !

I do not know of a single reported case of that ever happening and there has been numerous threads on this subject on FTE and other Ford truck sites. Another 'old wives tale' fear is having someone crawl under the truck and dumping your oil in a parking lot.
With the addition of a safety spring clip, both senerios become an almost impossibility. You can't remove the clip with your hand, it requires a good set of pliers to get it off and if someone were to crawl under your truck in a parking lot, they would probably have a wrench in one hand and a tire iron in the other to smash out your window.
The valve is tucked up, higher than the front axle and engine cross member. Now if you are out rock-crawling and bouncing your oil pan off of boulders, you may have a problem. It's more likely that you will be pulling your engine to replace the thin oil pan anyway.

Could you imagine the oil slick 14 quarts of oil would make in a parking lot?
Seems like a cool valve. I just don't put too many miles on the truck, thus don't have to change the oil often, so its not worth the $30 to me. But I imagine it would be to a lot of other people.

For the oil between the trans and engine, jump up and look inside the valley of your engine. Bet you will find a puddle of oil up there. Use a flashlight to find where the oil is coming from. If the oil is in the back of the engine, you may have a turbo/pesdestal o-ring leaking.
