Engine noise

I rebuilt my 300. It's got a comp 260 cam with steel gears, the head is ported and polished, offenhauser C and Motorcraft 2150. There is only about 2 hrs running time on it and it has developed a clicking noise in the front of the engine. I disconnected all the accessories and the noise is still there. With the engine running I touched the front gear case and I can feel it everytime it clicks. Does anyone have a suggestion or is it bad news??

Is the ticking steady or does it speed up when rpms increase?

It's only noticeable at idle, it seems to disappear as rpm rises.

Thanks for the reply.

Rumor has it the Comp timing set can be a little noisy, someone mentioned theirs made a ticking sound at idle when I had a knock in my new engine. Mine turned out to be a rod bearing so if you're just getting noise from the timing cover at idle it's probably no big deal.

My only concerns would be whether the cam gear was fully pressed onto the cam or the retaining bolts on the thrust plate are loose and the cam was sliding back and forth as rpm increased/decreased. Do you know if the cam thrust was measured after it was installed?

I finally got to my engine yesterday. The cam gear wasn't set on the cam deep enough, I re-set it to .005 from the retainer. Looks like that was the problem, but I haven't ran it yet.

Thanks for the help,
Tom
