A friend of mine has a 1978 F-150 extended cab with a 351 in it. He said it starts when ignition is in "crank" position but quits when ignition switch is returned to "run" pisition. Any ideas what may be the culprit? Thanks -Ed
My 79 460 was the other way.Soon as you turn the key back to run it would bump. All testing with ohm meter tested good.Volts to spec at white and red wire at module and at coil, 12 volts on start to coil and in run back to 6-7 volts.Replaced with spare module and bam, start right up as soon as you turn to start.
With points, that's a sure sign your ballast resistor or wire is bad. It should be the same diagnosis with the Dura-Spark electronic ignitions.
Follow 460me's link, at "BATTERY SOURCE TEST", you are testing for voltage at the "bat" terminal on the coil. A open resistance will leave you with no voltage at the coil. Key in start position bypasses the resistance to give full voltage when starting.
I had something similar happen on a previous '78 of mine, turned out to be the ignition switch. If he backs off the Crank position just enough to disengage the starter but not all the way back to the Run position does it keep running?
