OK guys I have a 2001 E-350 with the 7.3 diesel [ambulance] that is leaking oil from the pan. I took it to a local diesel shop and they told me 2000.00 to pull the engine and replace the pan. I have since talked to another mechanic and he thought there is a 2 piece oil pan available that may be installed with the engine in the chassis. Any thoughts on the pan replacement ? 34000 miles on it.
Thanks Dave
2 Grand is a bit steep .....I would find someone else....I did see a Video on YouTube with a guy using epoxy and a fibreglass Cap over the Pan without removing anything....The Pan itself costs about 200 bucks and the Wacker sealant is about $ 50 ...A grand sounds more reasonable .....The real way is to remove the engine , turn the engine upside down and Install the new Pan with the Special Wacker sealant, wait 24 hrs and put the engine back in ....Good Luck
Common problem with that era 7.3, oil pan rotting out.
For what is worth, my old neighbor had to have the oil pan replaced in his '99 F250, 4wd, 7.3, the shop that did it, cut the cross member out, to have access to the pan, and replaced it that way, then welded the cross member back in place, and that was about 5 years ago, and no problems with it, his cost was around $700 out the door.
Yes I have seen the fiberglass pan piece, my concern there is I don't think I could get the old paint/rust/oil off of the pan while still in the truck. If I could pull the engine to clean it I would just replace the pan as a pan is cheaper than the fiberglass piece.
If I could find someone that would cut the crossmember I would do that, it has to be easier than pulling the engine.
wannaBelkhuntin - I just notice that your in the "WesternNewYork" area, the shop that did my old neighbor's truck was in Batavia, if you need, I'll find out the shop name and location.
I have never heard of the imfamous 2 piece pan...But if it was me I would change the Injectors / Glow Plugs / UVC harnesess / rebuild Oil cooler / etc.. etc. while you have the engine out ....So you only do it once.....
