Hey guys, looks like my flexplate is shot and I wanted to know if anyone has tried the types that the autoparts stores are selling? The one I was able to find is running around 75$ and it seems like that low price might reflect poor quality.
Yeah... even with stock power, there's a lot of torque being applied to that. Aftermarket stuff likely uses Chinese steel, and I have a lot of horror stories regarding Chinese metals. If it was a non-critical item with easy access, that might be one thing - but....
It is the plate that bolts to the back of the crankshaft and the front of the torque converter. It has the job of coupling the engine to the transmission and has to deal with all the associated torque and load. Sort of like a flywheel does on a manual transmission, the flex plate and torque converter does for the automatic.
I'm sure there is a more complete answer but that is the basics of it.
