86 Bronco TC?

I bought a 1986 bronco recently. Guy said the trans (auto buttoned to a 302) was slipping. It's not, it's more of getting to the rpm where it's supposed to shift and not shifting till you let the throttle back and it will pick up next gear. Thing is, I was told it might be a solenoid, and if it is, what might that entail? That's my first question. Second q: how strong is the torque converter? How to tell if it's still holding together or if I should replace it anyways. It has 370K miles on body, 140K on a 5.0gt motor and normal trans. Everything is stock, INCLUDING EXHAUST *shaking head*. I was cursing freeway at 85mph no problem. Sometime it doesn't shift into gear. Aka: put it in drive and it doesn't go into gear, Rev the motor and it kicks into gear. Also, sometimes when I'm driving, I'll let off the throttle and let it go down to idle-ish. Then when I go to give it gas, it won't go into gesr, it'll just Rev up freely. Let me know?!

you more than likely have an AOD trans, the shifting is controlled by the TV cable pressure and if its not set correctly it will cause your symptoms. Research the proper method for setting the TV line pressure on your trans and you should be fine. Dont go romping on it though in the current condition. probably best to not even drive it till you get it correct.
easiest way to tell if the trans is good would be to drain fluid and replace the filter.

Also that trans is much happier when you keep it out of overdrive unless you are going over 55mph.
