Continually Impressed with V10
Trip average was 11.20 mpg and this included quite a bit of driving in the ozark mountains. Not the rockies by any means, but quite a bit of climbing at times. Rarely got on the interstate so average speeds were kept to 65-67 mph.
The torqueshift really does shine in tow/haul mode. Many times in the hills I never had to use the brakes. Downhill with a curve approaching I would just coast and be ready to climb the next hill in the right gear.
I am itching for a new F150 but I have a hard time getting rid of the truck I have. Easy stress free towing at it's best.
Pulling my 6x10 enclosed airplane trailer (6'3" inside height(7'7" ground to the top, my truck is about 6'9" at the roof) at 65 I get 9.2 in some mixed hills.
Recently pull a Tahoe q5i (around 3kish) on a 200 mile trip and got 9.6 at 65ish in a few rolling hills.
Then recently rented a 2wd 2016 Expedition to pull the same enclosed trailer on a 1500 mile round trip. It had the 3.5 eco boost. Cruise set to 70 I got 10.5 with a slight tail wind going up and 9.7 going home with a slight headwind. I don't think it ever saw boost because going up it spent most of the time in 6th taching around 1800rpm. I will say when you punch it and boost kicks in it will accelerate with that trailer quickly.
All wind resistance. Previous years I had a 3.5 Ford 150 non eco boost pulling my homemade 5.5x8' trailer(made from a harbor freight trailer). But that trailer only stands about 5'10" high(much lower than the cab). The 150's would get 16-17 on the same trip and a Dodge 5.7 got the same thing.
My truck also pulls the boat which is more than double the weight of the trailer easier because of the wind. Interesting to compare the red apples to the green apples.
I have always wondered how that engine would do in my truck and if it would be better or worse than my 6.8L. I do know the V10 doesn't work hard most of the time even with the boat on the back.
At one point on the trip I was passing another truck on an uphill. The v10, under load, at 5500 rpms is downright sweet sounding!
Just returned from a 400 mile round trip camping with the family. Hardly an overwhelming load for the V10 (especially compared to what other on here are towing). 4000# camper in the bed, and 2500# (or so) of trailer behind. Mostly freeway drive this time, running ~68mph -- didn't want to go any faster because outside temps were approaching 100'F, and I don't like to push the tires too much in those temps. Averaged just shy of 10mpg (even with the ******ty ethanol fuel). Pulled awesome.
and continually impressed with my V10 also. Enclosed 24'V nose trailer weighs about 3,500lb, race car is 2,950, and some tools/generator/etc adds a few hundred more. My V10 van pulls the empty trailer like it isn't there. When loaded: she's working though.
Upon unloading and unhooking, the ol' van feels as nimble as a Lamborghini

Empty mpg for the ecoboost would be the main benefit. But who knows, our trucks are heavy. Might be in the boost all the time on the V6.
At the event I towed my trailer to there were also many new f150's with the ecoboost pulling some 24'-26 or so bumperpull campers. There were getting 5 miles to the gallon. I have to think the v-8 were doing a lot better?? Stopping for gas every 100-125 miles sucks. I think the expe I had has a 25 gallon tank. At 200 miles I was getting nervous. My Sd has a 38 gallon tank.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about my 06 F350 V10. It always is in the correct gear and has the perfect gear for what you need. And the 3V it never ceases to impress me with how much low end torque it has for a gas engine!
I've had my truck loaded to the absolute maximum legal capacity in my state and while it worked it hard, keeping up with traffic was not a problem (60mph on a 55mph road)...... Yes it did burn gas like a drunken sailor.
The V10 Super Duty is by far the best value in the used HD truck market. I won't lie, I would love a 7.3 powerstroke or a 12 valve cummins truck, but I refuse to pay those kind of prices for trucks with 2-300k miles.
I can buy a ***** ton of fuel for the money I saved buying my v10 super duty.
