Knocking under resting foot

We've noticed an audible knocking that sounds to be coming from the front drivers side. It only happens at speed (over 30) and doesn't seem to be engine related. I can feel it under my resting foot while driving.

I know this is vegue but I think it may be enough to get started on figuring this out.

...and then move to your body mounts. Body mounts on mine are making the same noise you describe.

Number 2 position body mounts.... I went through this also. I checked everything else first because they were easy to diagnose if they were the culprit. Ended up being the body mounts.

My swaybar links did exactly as you described when worn. Note that when either the vehicle is on the ground or raised to where the axle is hanging can put enough pressure on the links to where they don't move when you test them by hand. It was only noticeable in my case when the vehicle was halfway off of the ground.

Although I don't have personal experience I can see where body mounts would make the same noise.

I recently went through this excessive. I highly recommend replacing the sway bar end links, it greatly improves handling and gets rid of a clunking noise every time I would drive over a bump.

However, I still have the groaning noise from body mounts. I tried re- torquing the mounts under the driver and passenger floor pans, with no change in noise.

Where are the position 2 body mounts, how do you replace them, and can they still be ordered through your local Ford dealer? Part number? Can it be done without a lift?

I discovered the knocking under the floor in my ex was from the nut backing off the sway bar end link. I was able to remove the nut by hand to match it up for a replacement. A lock nut sandwiched between two new nuts has slowed the frequency down but isn't a permanent fix.

I can refer everyone reading this thread to these two threads. One of them is MY little drama nightmare with this problem.

Just last night, I replaced the sway bar end links and bushings on my Ex. Removed 90% of the thumping and tapping sounds, and also most of the steering wheel vibration I have had since getting the diff rebuilt.

My end links were in terrible shape, no resistance to movement of any kind, and the sway bar bushings were equally bad.

It sounded like I had an exhaust rattle every time I hit a bump, I didn’t and don’t have an exhaust rattle…

Read your thread, went out Saturday, grabbed the links, I was able to move one of the links while on the ground. Trip to the parts store, set of Moog links later rattle, knocking and thumping is gone…. Getting the parts took longer than replacing the links, one of the rod ends has at least a ¼ to 3/8 inch play and rod end was close to falling out. Won’t speak to people that I have paid over the past years to look over everything and tell me what needed to be fixed.

Just a hint when replacing the link and the rod end starts to spin when taking off the nut, under the grease seal on the OEM link there is a 17MM hex allowing you to grab it with a wrench.

Anyway, Thanks Again Forum….. I love it when there are people out here that have forgotten more than I will ever know about these trucks……

UPDATE:
Solved. As it turn's out I gave misinformation. The knocking WAS speed related. I decided to take it to Les Schuabb. It was immediately obvious that the barrings wee shot. the wheel tipped in and out like the lugs were only half way on. $360 later its fixed.

Good news! (Well, except the $360 of course) I'm glad you got it figured out.

Also.... Thank you for reporting back about the outcome! So many members never tell us "what" they ended up doing to fix a problem. It helps our whole community to have folks post back about how they fixed something. Good job!

I have the same sound from the same area. If it's the body mounts is the solution just to replace?

Yes. However, FINDING the number two position cab mounts for the Excursion might be difficult. They are NOT the same as the F250, don't let anyone try to tell you they are. My dealer had to go to a third party supplier to find them when I did mine.... and they charged a lot of money for each one.

Once you get the parts, be careful of how you lift the body as it is very heavy and you can easily bend the body where you are lifting it. I used a big piece of steel to spread the load out a little and still bent things a little bit. I replaced both sides at the number two position as well as both number three position mounts. The Ex was incredibly tight and quiet again!

PS: If you do this, make sure you get the new style bolts and washers that go with the mounts.
