Update: I'm going to delete it. Question - since it already has 86k miles on it stock, should I have the intake cleaned out as well?
I just bought my first 6.7 and I want to hear the pros and cons of my two options. It has 86k miles and is my daily driver (short commute). It does double duty a dozen times a year for hunting and camp trips. I'm not looking for a hot rod or pulling machine but would love some more mpgs, better sound and more long term reliability.
IMHO, warranty is worth it. Even if I never use mine, the peace of mind for me is worth it. While catastrophic failures are rare, they happen and we see lots of posts about people crying because their motor or fuel system grenades and it's more than $10k to fix. I don't handle large, unexpected expenses well. If you go warranty, check out some of the online dealers as they tend to be much cheaper than walking into your dealer... My local one ended up matching the flood ford's online price though.
Having said that - deleting has it's pros as well. Regens and EGR being eliminated can help the motor, especially with short trips. There is no way you can justify the cost to delete to getting better MPGs though. People that I trust that post the MPG difference between deleted and not state it is around .2 better deleted.
I also tend to drive my vehicles until they are out of warranty and then trade into a new vehicle again.
Good insight, and thanks. First I've heard of the mpg possibility.. That's the main reason I would be doing the delete.
Are there any warranties people are happy with I can look into?
I've always gotten the Ford ESP warranty. It also comes with a loaner car if kept over night. Hope I never need it but ever since 2005, I've bought the extended warranty on any car or truck that I've bought new. These vehicles are getting crazy complicated and expensive. I still do all of the maint. myself and keep the receipts.
I found a ford ESP BaseCare plan with pretty solid coverage (engine, trans, rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, brakes, steering, front suspension, electrical and a/c and heat) for an additional 4 years, 48k mile coverage for ~$2200. That would take me to 122k miles and is about right for my annual driving.
That's also about the amount I would pay for the delete and upgrades. If the mileage doesn't increase at least 4+ mpg (I drive like a 90 yr old man), then it seems like a no brainier. I'm still surprised about the .2 mpg increase stated above with full delete.
Spartan or the EZ-LYNK would be my choice. Kory at PPEI tunes on the EZ. I'm bias to Spartan as they are really killing the tuning game right now and I know the guys personally.
I'm at 65k miles. Been tuned since 10k. When I do my CCV mod in the next week or so, I plan to remove my intake and soak it real good. Even after only having EGR function for 10k miles, it looks nasty. I say clean it!
