Most likely collected there around the plug over time. Remove the plug without blowing it out first and it will end up on the threads on the way out.
Yep, blowing out the plug well BEFORE pulling the plugs is a very important step in the plug change procedure, the new plugs will pick up some more of that sand on the way in.
What did the old plugs look like? I am waiting for my new plugs/boots to show up, hopefully I'll get them and have time to install them before this weekend's towing trip. I'll post pics of mine once I'm done.
The old plugs....Bosch...were literally terrible looking. I don't know how they even worked. The boots and the springs look great straight from ford with the exception of one was aftermarket cheap.
