The brake thread- What are you running and how do you like it?

A lot of questions pop up about what the "best" combo to go with is and there are so many options I figured a nice thread with just people current set-up and thoughts would be great. Try not to post up questions asking to troubleshoot your brakes, this is just to post current or past set-ups to help others make well informed decisions before making a purchase.

I'll start:

I'm running the Powerstop full brake kit. I love it because it comes with EVERYTHING you need to do a full brake job except the braided lines and fluid. Personally once you get the braided lines you have a brand new better that OEM set of brakes.

Power Stop 1-Click Z36 Extreme Truck and Tow Brake Kits with Calipers KC1906A-36 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

The bad:

You have to send in your cores which is a bit of a hassle.
The calipers I received were not OEM Ford branded calipers
The powdercoating was chipped really bad on all the calipers and was not really that great.

Powerslot Cryo treated rotor with Hawk LTS pads and Permatex brake grease. Maybe this summer I will upgrade to Stainless lines. Calipers are the same from when I bought the truck, front sliders and hardware have been changed though.

Rotors:
StopTech Sport Slotted Cryo-Treated Rotor

Pads:
Hawk LTS Truck/SUV Pads

I ran the Hawk pads on my last Excursion and I LOVED them, they are a great pad. I had plans on buying those until USCG_PA pointed out the set I bought.

Rotors: Ford OEM
Calipers: Ford OEM
Pads: EBC Yellow Stuff
Lines: Russel Braided stainless steel

Thoughts: When I bought my excursion with 132k on it one of my great dislikes was the amount of force you had to put into the brake pedal to get it to stop. Compared to any other vehicle it was a huge amount of effort. Needed new hub bearings so I installed all of the above. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Brakes like any other vehicle now. Great feel, great stopping power (for a 4 ton truck, it's not going to outbrake a mustang). The downside is the ebc yellow stuff pads dust ALOT. Thankfully Ex isn't my daily driver, or I'd be cleaning wheels daily.

TRW inc is global supplier of braking systems.
Braking Systems | ZF TRW

you said the caliper was not a OEM ford caliper and I am curious who originally made the caliper if it was not made by visteon, I was guessing maybe it was made by TRW.

Powder coated rotors? You mean the zinc plating or are you talking about the powder coating on the calipers? I don't think you could power coat a rotor and have it be functional...?

Good catch, I meant the calipers. Also you could powder coat a rotor, it just wouldn't look good after the first time you tried to bed the brakes

New Ford Rotors Front and Rear
EBC Yellowstuff Front and Rear
Stainless braided brake lines (all 5 pieces)

About 1000 miles now and they still are amazing to me.
Brake dust is a bit worse than the previous pads of unknown manufacturer, but I want brakes that stop the vehicle.

NAPA premium pads and rotors on the front. No idea what is on the back. Rotors were shot to hell and after getting quotes of $600-700 to do front brakes I did them myself for $300.

- Vatozone premium pads F + R
- Vatozone remanufactured calipers F + R
- eBay OEM style blank rotors F + R
- Russell SS lines F + R
- Brand new DOT4 fluid

I like it just fine, much better than the stuff that was on there before.

Hi,
I am planning a brake job soon. I've read a little about the F450 upgrade, are the aftermarket pads and drilled/slotted rotors good enough? That sounds much easier if it is.
Thanks!

are they good enough for what ? we would need some gauge of your expectations or performance standards before we could make a accurate guess for you.

that said, a 13" rotor will never perform as well as 14" rotor but that doesn't mean you can't optimize the 13"
