Drove 4 hr trip this weekend and noticed that the cruise control would not disengage unless I really hit the brake hard. Does any one know what switch that is and is it the same one that lets you put the truck in drive from park? Thanks
On all the previous vehicles I've had, the brake light switch was what deactivated it. They weren't Excursions or even Fords for that matter, but considering all were different brands with the same style deactivation method....
Two switches to look at: One is on the end of the master cylinder in the engine compartment, and the other is on the brake pedal itself. There is two of them for safety. Do you have brake lights(pedal switch)? You can jumper wire the one under the hood, to check the operation of the brake pedal switch...just be ready to turn it off with the button on the wheel....AFTER you have verified that steering wheel off switch works to kill the cruise control the way the vehicle is now. So check that first then go checking switches.
The signalling half of the brake pedal position switch is not working, either through failure or being out of adjustment. That same signal is used to operate the shifter interlock. The brake lamps, which are operated by the other half of that switch, may or may not be simultaneously affected, depending on the specifics of the failure. If the brake lights indeed to not work correctly, then the issue is directly attributable to the BPP switch.
The switch on the master cylinder is probably working since the speed control does disengage with increased pedal pressure. In any event, it's not supposed to disengage the speed control when the pedal is tapped, that's not its purpose.
More than likely it's the brake pressure switch (on the master cylinder). They fail differently quite often they will have different issues when they go bad! That is the only switch I've ever seen fail that is part of the cruise control system.
Thanks for the response everybody. Brake lights work. Been having a issue with the Neutral Safety Switch Im guessing cause sometimes you have to step on the brake a couple times to get it out of park. The cruise control disengaging issue is new. I was just wondering if one switch works both systems. I will look at the brake petal one tonight.

That pressure switch has nothing to do with the shift interlock while the BPP switch is involved with both functions that are having problems. Failure of that pressure switch usually manifests as failure to engage, intermittent disengagement, or the truck goes up in flames if the recall hasn't been performed.

Yes, see above. The problem might also be the wiring harness in the immediate vicinity of the BPP switch or the switch may have been knocked out of adjustment. If briefly tapping the brake pedal causes the stop lamps to also actuate (you should hear the switch "click"), then the switch's mechanical adjustment can be ruled out and you'll need to focus on the electrical portion of the circuit.
Well looked under the fuse panel and what a mess! between the gauges, extra fuse panel, aftermarket lights and whatever else I've added in there couldn't find anything. Not really sure what I'm looking for. Gonna spend some time tonight and clean up the wires under there. Do any of you have a picture of what this switch looks like and where it is? Thanks again!
