After reading the book, I'm afraid I still don't understand. When the hubs are in AUTO, & the shift on the fly selector is turned to 4X4 high, or 4X4 low, is the truck in 4 wheel drive. I'm an old guy, what happened to free or lock.
John
ESOF 4x2 / Hubs Auto = 2wd with the front axle not turning at all.
ESOF 4x2 / Hubs Lock = 2wd with the front axle being forced to turn by the front wheels.
ESOF 4x4 / Hubs Auto = 4wd.
ESOF 4x4 / Hubs Lock = 4wd.
High or low, and Electronic Locker on or off does not matter.
I hope that helps. Provided everything is working correctly, leave it in Auto and just shift with ESOF.

"Free and lock" are still around but found on XL or XLT trucks that didn't opt for the ESOF and came with the standard manual lever on the floor. For you truck, when in auto and when 4hi or 4low is selected the hubs automatically engage for you so you don't need to get out of the truck. In a situation where the vacuum fails for the auto hubs, there is a "lock" position you can manually turn the hubs to as a backup system.
